Book: Second Chance Summer by Morgan Matson

★★★★/★★★★★

“A thousand moments that I had just taken for granted- mostly because I had assumed that there would be a thousand more.”

This was my second book of Morgan Matson and after reading The Unexpected Everything, I became a fan of her and decided to read all her other books. Second Chance Summer is a story about family, friendship, life's mishaps and second chances at things.

Taylor Edwards has a habit of running away especially when things get hard. It's in her nature to just leave when she realizes things are not going her way. But when they receive the news that their father has cancer and he wishes for them to spend their summer at the family's lake house, Taylor has no choice but to agree and face that first thing she ran away from five years ago.

Taylor wasn't the best character for me but she wasn't the worst either. She was your typical teenager who had boy-school-family problems, who sometimes got scared and who sometimes did things she regretted. At first I didn't feel any special connection with her (I actually didn't like her) but I slowly grew on her and I liked how her character has developed throughout the book. And given her circumstances, she'd been a strong girl and at some point she learned to brave things she thought she couldn't handle and she realized that running away can't really solve a problem. If anything, running away could make things worse.

The thing I loved most about this book is the way how it focused mainly on the family aspect. It was heartwarming to see how Taylor and her family began to get closer with each other as they spent more time together. Warren and Gelsey were more like my kind of characters and it was nice to see them enjoying the summer despite thinking they should be spending it somewhere else. There were some scenes that brought tears to my eyes and it was just so heartbreaking everytime there was Taylor-Dad scene. I'm close with my family so it was really good seeing Taylor's family developing their relationship with each other. And at some point I knew it would have a sad and heartbreaking and inevitable ending so I braced myself right before it happened.

“Daddy," I whispered, feeling my own breath hitch in my throat. "I love you."
Just when I was sure he was asleep, the one corner of his mouth lifted in a smile. "I knew that," he murmured. "Always knew that.”

Taylor and Lucy's friendship was also another thing I loved in the book. Five years of lost friendship but they still found a way to rekindle. It was hard, of course, but at some point they realized that their friendship was worth reviving after all. And Henry, oh my god Henry! I know I always fall for every guy in the book I read and Henry was no exception. Twelve year old Henry was hurt by twelve year old Taylor by disappearing one summer five years ago. It was supposed to be a special summer for them with developing feelings and first kisses but when things didn't turn out the way Taylor expected them to, she decided to just run away. Now Taylor was back and Henry was surprised to see her again. But as summer went on and explanations were laid out and second chances were given, Taylor and Henry found themselves catching up on five years worth of things they missed on each other.

I thought you'd never speak tome again.”
I tried,” he reminded me, and I smiled at that. But seriously,” he said, looking right at me, his tone a little more measured, “you're a hard habit to break.

I've grown to love Matson's writing even after only reading two of her books. Her characters were simple and realistic and though I didn't like Taylor at the beginning, Matson did a good job at her character-development. And it was a perfect book for summer with the lake house, the beach, the family games/movie nights and all the summer activities. And oh, the fireworks! Overall it was a good book that will make you smile, cry and will make you cherish your family more. A book not about having the best or worst summer, but about learning a thing or two about life. A book about family, friendship, life's mishaps and second chances.

Poem: A Pair of Wings

I feel the wind on my skin
The warmth of the sun
Everyday I glow within
But I still feel like dying

All I want is to feel alive
To feel like flying
So everyday I count to five
But I can't still make myself dive

Because the height scares me
The ground is down far
But everyday I pray dearly
And I'm still waiting patiently

I pray for no other things
Not wealth nor power
Just a pair of beautiful wings
A pair to lift up my feelings

Book: The Forbidden Wish by Jessica Khoury

★★★★★/★★★★★

He is the sun, and I am the moon. We must stay apart or the world will be thrown out of balance.

Okay. Let me start by saying that this book was amazing. A story about friendship, life, sacrifices and forbidden love that will surely capture your heart. I know I've told this a million times that I love fairytales and before reading this book I'm not quite a big fan of Aladdin but now, well, Zahra and Aladdin hold a special place in my heart.

What I loved most about this book was the romance (yes, I love book romance!) and the adventures and the girl power. Basically it's about Aladdin and the jinni in the lamp and the three wishes but this time the jinni falls for her master. And yes, her meaning the jinni is a girl.

Zahra, the great jinni of the lamp, was trapped in the dessert for 500 hundred years, alone and haunted by the memories of her previous master, but now a boy named Aladdin found her. And as a jinni, of course she has to grant him three wishes. You can say that Zahra and Aladdin have started on the wrong foot but as they begin their journey back to Aladdin's land, Parthenia, they realize that they have to trust each other eventually.

I liked Zahra because she's powerful and smart and a badass. She always knew what she's doing and she never acts recklessly. She makes sure everything she does is reasonable and right. Aladdin, on the other hand, is reckless and he seeks revenge for his parents but deep inside he's a good person. And of course he's witty and a charmer.

“I’ve been chased, shot, cut, beaten, and dragged a hundred leagues in the blink of an eye.” He shrugs and offers me a hand. “I need a drink.”

As Zahra and Aladdin develop a master-jinni relationship, Zahra also starts feeling something else. A familiar feeling that once led to the destruction of one of the great cities on their land. The feeling that killed her Habiba, Queen Roshana the last queen of Neruby. This feeling scared Zahra but she tries her best to stop it because she knew what the cost will be if she lets it continue.

I stare at him a moment, conflicted. He carried me. He took an arrow for me. I’ve had few kind masters in my long, strange life. Cruelty, I understand. But kindness frightens me, for my defenses are weak against it.”

And, and, and! I loved how most of the characters were females! Aside from Zahra, we have Princess Caspida, descendant of Queen Roshana, and then there are the Watchmaidens, female warriors who swore to protect the queen/future queen of their land. Princess Caspida is the next queen and she only wants what's best for her people. At night, she secretly becomes the Phoenix who protects and watches over the people of Parthenia. She cares for her people and she'll do anything to protect them especially from Prince Darian, her betrothed, and Darian's greedy father, Sulifer who wants to own the kingdom. Aside from the internal threats to the kingdom, Caspida is also battling with the jinns and the great Shaitan Nardukha. Everyone hates the jinns because they are vicious and untrustworthy.

“Damn you, and damn all your kind. I am Queen Caspida of the Amulens, and I do not fear you. Bring your worst, because I will be waiting.”

Like their princess, the watchmaidens composed of Ensi, Khavar, Neesa and Raz are tough and clever. Their loyalty is with Caspida and they're willing to do everything to protect her. They somehow grow fond of Aladdin and Zahra though their first meeting wasn't exactly friendly at all.

Now, now, let's get to the romance. We'll, there's no love triangle on this one, you guys! I don't hate love triangles but it's just refreshing to read a book without any love triangle or something. But Zahra's struggles and hesitations are what hinder her relationship with Aladdin. Zahra doesn't want to make the same mistake twice so she hesitates a lot of times with her feelings towards Aladdin. She knows it's wrong, she know it's forbidden and she knows its cost. But Aladdin is honest with his feelings and though Zahra keeps on pushing him away, he keeps on coming back. Because that's what you do when you love someone.

“You loved before, and she was taken from you. Ever since, you’ve been afraid to love again. You insist you’re a monster because you’re afraid of being human.”

Zahra has been bound to her lamp for thousands of years but she had a life before that. She was once a great Queen and she had a kingdom. But she doesn't tell anything to Aladdin even though he asks her about it. Aladdin also struggles with his feelings and is thorn between getting his revenge and loving Zahra. He knew the moment he wished to become a Prince, he needs to marry Princess Caspida to get his revenge but as days pass by, he grows to love Zahra more and more which he knows will compromise his plan. But what can he do when his heart chooses Zahra?

“It’s wrong and stupid and wonderful, Zahra. I didn’t mean for it to happen, but here I am. I love you.”

Zahra weighs all her options and jinns be damned but her feelings for Aladdin are as great as great can be. She knows it will be bad and it's the Forbidden Wish but she's ready to face the wrath of Nardukha. She knew her love for Aladdin could result to the same fate as what happened to Roshana but now she's willing to fight Nardukha. If she wasn't able to save her beloved friend, sister, Roshana before, now she will try everything to save Aladdin.

I don’t know the exact moment I fell in love with Aladdin, but I know I am still falling. And I never want to stop.

Together, Aladdin and Zahra face the great Shaitan Nardukha. They know it wouldn't be easy but at least they fight for their love. At least they together.

“Have faith, Smoky,” he says softly, cupping my face in his palm, “This isn’t over yet. Whatever happens, we’ll be together.”

I really loved this book and honestly, I haven't moved on from it yet. I've re-read some of my favorite parts and I think I'm far from being over this book. It's just so amazing and the characters are all endearing and the world-building is engrossing and Zahra is lovely and Aladdin is, well, Aladdin. Everything in this book is captivating and I loved it! In short, read it!

Book: The Sea of Tranquility by Katja Millay

 ★★★/★★★★★

“We have an unspoken agreement. I let him watch me. He lets me watch him. We never call each other on it. It's a gift we give one another. No strings, no expectations, no reading between the lines. We're like mysteries to one another. Maybe if I can solve him and he can solve me, we can explain each other. Maybe that's what I need. Someone to explain me.”

I think I'm in the minority in regards with this book. I'm not saying I didn't enjoy it but the book didn't really grip until I was halfway through. The first few chapters I felt detached and I was patiently waiting for something, anything, that could pique my interest but there were only few vague back stories and it frustrated me that Nastya was a bit angsty. I admit I was intrigued when I first read the plot but somehow when I was reading the book I didn't feel a connection with any of the characters. It's not that Nastya or Josh or Drew weren't likeable but I didn't relate with them at all. But that didn't mean I didn't like them. In fact, I liked Josh!

“It's a chair. Stop overanalyzing it. I'm not selling it and I'm not giving it to someone else. I made it for you. It's yours.

We knew something terrible happened to Nastya, thus the attitude and the all black dress code, but we didn't really get to see what it was until the latter part of the book. I knew it was meant for the suspense and I think it's what kept me reading.

“Sometimes I just forget how to breathe.”

I tried to understand Nastya, to relate with her but I failed to comprehend why she chose that road. To refuse to talk, to insists on dressing like that, to act all scary and tough and her actions confused the hell out of me. Sometimes she was all nice but then the next she was all bitchy. And, and, and! If I were her mother, I wouldn't have agreed to let her live with her Aunt. I don't know, it just felt all wrong. But while I endured Nastya's fickle attitude, I liked Josh and Drew. Maybe I liked them more than Nastya.

Josh has lost everyone in his life, not all at once, but one person at a time. His mother and sister on a car accident when he was 8, eventually his dad on a heart attack and then his grandfather when he was 18. He was also emancipated and people around him knew better than to take pity on him. In short, he was all alone. Until Nastya.

Maybe one day you’ll come back. Maybe you never will and that’ll suck, but you can’t keep doing this. The blame and the self-loathing and the bullshit. I can’t watch that. It makes me hate you for hating yourself. I don’t want to lose you. But I’d rather lose you if it means you’ll be happy. I think if you come back with me today, you’ll never be okay. And I’ll never be okay if you aren’t. I need to know that there’s a way for people like us to end up okay. I need to know that there even is such a thing as okay, or maybe not just okay, maybe even good, and it’s out there and we just haven’t found it yet. There’s got to be a happier ending than this, here. There’s got to be a better story. Because we deserve one. You deserve one. Even if it doesn’t end with you coming back to me.

Josh was sweet. Making a chair for Nastya was sweet. (I think I would fall for anyone who'd make a chair for me!) Cooking for her was sweet. Calling her Sunshine was sweet. Offering her the mp3 was sweet. And I liked that he made Nastya feel safe.

“I know at that moment what he's given me and it's not a chair. It's an invitation, a welcome, the knowledge that I am accepted here. He hasn't given me a place to sit. He's given me a place to belong.”

Drew was the typical asshole-who-fucks-every-girl but I liked that deep inside there was still a man in him. Someone who cared enough about a girl to the extent of making her hate him just so she felt something, even hate, toward him. Drew was a shit but at least he genuinely cared for Nastya.

She seems to hate you.” She seems to hate everyone but I don’t bother to say that. I’m really trying to figure out why he’s wasting his time with this girl. It’s out of character. He should have given up on this a while ago.
“So, it’s a challenge.”
“Exactly. Doesn’t exerting effort go against your personal philosophy?”
“It does, but maybe I’m entering a personal growth phase. Trying to improve myself.”

The book in general was okay but sometimes I felt like the dialogue and innuendos were forced. There were times I tried not to notice but well, I did. And I didn't mind the language but there were a lot of obscene words and profanities. The students in this book also kinda scared me a little but I guess that's what it was like in highschool somewhere. Anyway, another concern of mine was the way how the big reveal was prolonged. I mean, I kept guessing and guessing about what happened to Nastya (making theories and everything) but when it was finally laid out, it wasn't that, you know, big like the others. Yes, it was terrible and dreadful and yes, it ruined her but it wasn't what I was expecting. I expected something more horrible or just something more.

I really wanted to like this book but I think it just didn't work out for me. It was slow paced, I failed to connect with the characters, there was too much angst, inconsistencies with the plot, typical highschool cliché and maybe it's just me but the book was too long when it could've been shorter and better. Anyway.

But still, there were things in the book that I loved! Like when Josh's grandfather told him about what heaven looked like and the garage moments! I think my favorite part of the book was when Josh and Nastya were in the garage making chairs and other furniture. And Josh, mostly it was because of Josh that I liked this book.

I love you, Sunshine. I tell her, before I lose my nerve. And I don't give a shit whether you want me or not.

Movie Trailer: The Girl With All The Gifts

I was browsing YouTube the other day and this trailer caught my attention. I knew I have heard of this The Girl With All The Gifts before and when I searched about it, it turned out that it's actually based on a book by M.R. Carey. And I somehow remembered seeing reviews of this book from some of my online friends.

I obviously haven't read the book but I always dig zombie movies and this one looked interesting!
I've read the plot somewhere and from what I understand, humanity has been infected by some fungus which turned them into zombies. Now the few surviving human race are focused on finding a cure by studying children which have been affected and are now part zombie-part human. These children can still think and only lose control when they are too close to a human. In order to do their studies, scientists need to kill the subject but a teacher named Helen finds it uncomfortable. Now when Melanie, a Hungry (that's what they call a child zombie) is next in line, Helen tries to save her but their facility is attacked by a group of other Hungries and that's when they surviving part begins.

Release date: September 3, 2016
Now that it piqued my interest, I might probably read the book one of these days before the movie gets out.

Book: See How They Run (EmbassyRow #2) by Ally Carter

★★★½/★★★★★

Just a few weeks ago I was obsessed with the Scarred Man and justice and proving to the world that I’m not crazy. I was wrong, of course, about so many things. And I may be wrong about this. But if there’s something worse than knowing an awful thing, it’s knowing nothing at all.

Okay. So, the second book in the Embassy series, I can say, was more intense than the first. Not action-packed intense but crazy-Grace intense! Well, Gracie wasn’t really crazy but she just happened to remember that she actually killed her mother. And as if that wasn’t enough to make her crazy! I remember having mixed feelings with the first book and I’m not really sure what I feel about this one. It was gripping and entertaining but somehow Gracie became more and more paranoid. But then again, she had a reason to be!

The story picks up when Grace finally remembers what happened that day when her mother died. After years and years of accusing the Scarred Man, Dominic, of killing her mother, she realizes that she was actually the one who killed her mother. Now Grace tries to live with that fact that she killed her mother and even though no one really blamed her, it still hurts to know the truth. The story continues as Jamie and his West Point friend, Spence, visit Adria. And when Spence is found dead one day after a party, tension mounts in Embassy Row and next thing they know, one of Grace's friends is accused of being a murderer.

I enjoyed this book better than the first because here we see more action from Grace and her friends. They did a lot of spy things and it was actually exciting how they explored tunnels and caves and secret doors! But more importantly, we got to know more of Adria's history that might've gotten Grace's mom in danger in the first place. I also liked the idea of the secret society and I think I might've an idea why they were so eager to take in Grace.

But though there were interesting things going on, I can't say that I liked Grace that much in this book. Mostly she irritated me. I don't blame her but it was annoying how she kept blaming herself and thinking she was crazy and that she made all the bad choices in the world! I mean, she can be crazy at times but being crazy over and over again was frustrating. As for her friends, I've grown to like them more and more! Noah, I liked him ever since the first book and I don't know *shrug* but I'm somehow hoping for him to have "something" with Grace. Lol.

Noah shakes his head and backs away. I know he wants to fix this — fix me. He doesn’t yet know that his best friend was broken long before he met her — that I’ll never really be okay again.

Megan and Rosie were still adorable and Lila, well, I'm not sure about her but she can't be that bad. And Alexei, oh Alexei, there were times I was so sure about him but there were also times when I felt nervous of who he might really be. But of course he can't be the bad guy!

I laugh because, for once, Alexei chose to run away with me.

We also got to finally meet Jamie, the big brother. He wanted to be there for Grace, to protect and make sure she was fine. He came to make sure that his little sister didn't blame herself for what happened to their mother. He was also Alexei's bestfriend but with all the allegations after what happened to Spence, they drifted apart.
Alexei’s mask is gone, forgotten. And Jamie looks up at his oldest friend and says, “I’m okay …”
“Shut up,” Alexei snaps. “Save your strength.”
“I’m fine.” Jamie struggles to pull his arm from around Alexei’s shoulders, but when he does he stumbles, and Alexei catches him.
“I’ve got you,” Alexei says.
“I know,” Jamie replies.
This is how boys make up, I decide. Some bloodshed, a mob, and a few terse words, not a single one of which is sorry.
The last part of the book was my favorite part, with the celebration and Jamie and Gracie in the middle of it and everything else happening around them. It all happened so fast but I loved how Grace finally figured things out and how Alexei just showed up when he needed to and Princess Ann helping them and Dominic saving them and Ms. Chancellor explaining Grace everything. It was so intense I was actually on the edge of my seat the whole time!

Overall, it was fast-paced, gripping and a little frustrating if you hate repetitive scenes and cliffhanger. And with the revelation at the end of the book, I know it's gonna be a long wait until the third book! But I'll patiently wait for it because I'm interested to know how it would all end.

Book: A Gathering of Shadows by V.E. Schwab

 ★★★★★/★★★★★

Everyone thinks I have a death wish, you know? But I don't want to die-dying is easy. No, I want to live, but getting close to death is the only way to feel alive. And once you do, it makes you realize that everything you were doing  before wasn't actually living. It was just making do. Call me crazy, but I think we do the best living when the stakes are high.”

I don't even know where to start! I've been trying to write a review since I finished the book and until now I'm still trying because there's just too many things to say! Well, for starters, this book, without a doubt, was brilliant and amazing and... magical. And I loved it! I've been hooked the moment I read the first book of the Shades of Magic series, A Darker Shade of Magic (review here) and finishing A Gathering of Shadows just made me love it even more. Now I'm patiently waiting for the third book and I believe it's going to be epic!

The second book picks up four months after Kell and Lila have dethroned the Dane twins of White London. Four months since Rhy almost died (well, he did but Kell brought him back to life), four months since Holland was thrown to the Black London together with the mysterious black stone and four months since Lila walked away from Kell. It's been four months since the Black Night that changed a lot of things. Since then Kell had to stop smuggling things from different Londons and the King had made it clear that he wanted Rhy and Kell protected all the time. And being protected meant Kell can't really go around freely doing things without the King knowing. Kell tried to understand but somehow he felt like a prisoner. Like he was trapped. It was bad enough that he felt responsible for what happened during the Black Night but it was worse when he felt like he lost the King and Queen's trust. Now he was trying to be okay with all of it but it was consuming him. He needed a release, a way to feel alive again. And that was when Rhy thought of an idea; Kell participating in the upcoming Element Games, an international competition where magicians gather to compete. Kell reluctantly agreed because he knew it was bad for both of them but as the competition came close, he actually felt excited. Lila, on the other hand, has found her dream of being a pirate. Well, she didn't really become a pirate but she's found the ship of her liking. She initially planned to kill the captain of the Night Spire, Alucard Emery, but things started to change when she just suddenly grew fond of the captain and his crew. Meanwhile, in White London, a new King has claimed the throne and he wanted his London to flourish with magic again. But he can't quite do that with someone inside him trying to control him.

Everything in this book was perfect! The plot, the characters, the magic, the world-building, the writing style, everything! I'm a big fan of fantasy novels so I'm really really glad I picked up this series. And I knew when I started reading the first book that I'd found my new favorite series.

I can give you a lot of reasons why I love this book and let me start with Kell. An Antari, a loyal brother, a good man, and everything a powerful magician can be! Saints, I adore him and don't get me started with how good of a brother he was. But with his bond with Rhy, it somehow made him feel trapped inside his own body. He was extra careful because with Rhy's life at stake, he couldn't take any chances. He mostly stayed in the Basin, some sort of a practice room, where he found some release when he trained. Some days he still thought of Lila, wondering where she could be, if she was still thieving.

I know it's mad, but for a second I though it was...
Saints, you're seeing her in everyone and everything now, Kell? There's a word for that.
 Hallucination?
 Infatuation.
Kell snorted. I'm not infatuated, he said.  I just..." He just wanted to see her.  Our paths crossed one time. Months ago. It happens.

I can't help but love Kell's character because man, he was perfect! I mean, sure he had his dark side but his good side make up for that. He though of Rhy's safety above all, he tried to do the best for his country, he stopped smuggling things from other London and he stayed in the palace even when it felt like a prison. He felt frustrated and lonely but the kingdom and Rhy's safety were his priorities.

Lila, I loved since the first book. She was headstrong, smart and she always got what she wanted. Man, she was a badass! She was at the Night Spire the first part of the book, earning her place by robbing and killing Alucard's best thief. When she found out that Alucard could use magic, she was determined to make him teach her. So then she became a part of Alucard's crew--privateering and learning magic. We saw more of Lila in this book and I wasn't surprised that she became more ambitious. She's always been dreaming of big and impossible things but now she was flirting with death by joining the Element Games.

I am Delilah Bard, she thought. Pirate, thief, magician. Her fingertips began to thrum.
I have crossed worlds and taken ships. Fought queens and saved cities. Her bones shuddered and her blood raced. I am one of a kind.”

Rhy was still our adorable prince. We got to see a lot of him in the book and I loved seeing more of him! He still had his charms, always bickering with Kell and always winning his brother's heart. But Rhy also struggled with his new magical bond with Kell. Sure, he was grateful to Kell but it was still a borrowed life. With the thought of burdening Kell or Kell always restraining himself to do things because he was thinking of him, it made Rhy felt bad. And though Kell didn't say anything, Rhy could feel how hard it was for him.

Rhy knew Kell's true hesitation, and it wasn't getting caught, or starting trouble; it was the fear of causing him pain. Every day Kell moved like Rhy was made of glass, and it was driving them both mad. But once the tournament started, once he saw that Rhy was fine, that he could take it, survive it--hell, could survive anything, wasn't that the point?--then maybe Kell would finally let go, stop holding his breath, stop trying to protect him, and just live.
The bond between Rhy and Kell had always been strong even before Kell shared his life with Rhy. They cared and loved each other so much they were willing to do anything, everything for each other and I think that's what made me love them even more.

The prince took a step forward, and swayed, but Kell caught him and kept him upright. There you go again, murmured Rhy, leaning his head on Kell's shoulder. You never let me fall.
And I have a new favorite! Alucard Emery, captain of the Night Spire, magician and a flirt. Well, he had a right to be one. I wasn't sure about him at first but as the story went on I found him intriguing. He was mysterious, he can see magic (literally) and the twist in his part (why Kell loathed him) was oh my god! It was unpredictable and perfect. I mean, oh my god! I was swooning while reading that part (and I might've reread it a couple of times, or more!) and I can't help but love Schwab even more!

Fix your crown, my prince, he called back as he reached the door. It's crooked.
Okay, moving on... another thing I loved about Alucard (among other million things) was that he let Lila be a part of his crew and grew fond of her. I knew he saw something in Lila and somehow was intrigued because of her unique personality but nonetheless he welcomed her. And I admit that there were times I felt like there was something between him and Lila. But nah, Alucard already belonged to someone else. Lol.

Alucard sighed, and closed his eyes, tipping his head back against the plush chair. He had a nice face, soft and sharp at the same time. She had the strangest urge to reach out and trace the lines of it with her fingers, Lila really should have killed him, back when they first met. Back before she could know him. Back before she could like him so much.

This book is really brilliant! With the characters, plot, world-building, writing style and its magic, it was perfect! And I know we didn't see much of romance in the first book but I was happy there were some in this book. Because I'm a sucker for romance, didn't I tell you? And Kell + Lila was asdfghjklskhffgh :")

They danced in silence for several long moments, spinning together and apart, a slower version of their cadence in the ring. And then, out of nowhere, Lila asked, Why?
Why what?
Why didn you ask me to dance?
He almost smiled. A ghost. A trick of the light. So you couldn't run away again before I said hello.
“Hello,” said Lila.
“Hello,” said Kell. “Where have you been?”
Lila smirked. “Why, did you miss me?”
Kell opened his mouth. Closed it. Opened it again before finally managing to answer, “Yes.”

So, I gave this book a perfect shining 5-star because I really loved it. And I know I'll probably spoil you if I talk more so I'll stop here. In a nutshell, you should read this book because it's brilliant!

Book: Magic Study by Maria V. Snyder

 ★★★★/★★★★★

“Living is a risk, I snapped at him. Every decision, every interaction, every step, every time you get out of bed in the morning, you take a risk. To survive is to know you're taking that risk and to not get out of bed clutching illusions of safety.”

To be honest, I enjoyed this book more than the first one, Poison Study. There was more action, more adventures, more revelations and Yelena got to know her family and a bit more of her history. I was actually hoping to see more of Yelena's relationship with Valek but Valek didn't appear until the latter part of the book. It was kinda disappointing but I think it just made his connection with Yelena stronger.

So the second book gives us the story of Yelena traveling and following Irys, Fourth Master Magician, to Sitia after finally defeating Brazell and Mogkan, the people who kidnapped her when she was a child. Yelena has no choice but to flee to Sitia  after revealing her magic to Commander Ambrose who forbids magic in Ixia. But despite that, Commander Ambrose gave Yelena a head start so she can go to Sitia, his payment to Yelena for saving his life.

Yelena's plan is to follow Irys to Sitia so Irys can teach her how to control her magic and so she can meet her family. Once in Sitia, her family, except his brother Leif, is glad to see her again. Her parents, Perl and Esau, are relieved to see her alive and well but Leif seems not happy with her return and Yelena can only wonder why. However, this meeting with her family is short-lived because Yelena still needs to go to the Academy where she needs to study and learn to control her magic. At the Academy, Yelena meets the other three Master Magicians, her fellow students, and a new enemy-turned-friend-turned-enemy-again, Cahil and his men, including Goel.

I loved this book better because here we see Yelena grow and learn how to make decisions of her own. Since Valek and her friends, Ari and Janco, are not there with her, she learns to trust other people too (and that also includes horses). And while she struggles to control her own power and with the idea that she might be a Soulfinder, she also deals with the different problems around her. She confronts Leif who hates her and thinks she's a spy from Ixia, she tries to help capture the perpetrator who raped and almost killed Tula, she braves facing Cahil who also thinks she's a spy and wants to use her to know more of Ixia's military structure. But more importantly, Yelena tries to balance her loyalty between Sitia, her home, and Ixia, where she learned how to live. She wants to show the people of Sitia that Commander Ambrose only wants the best for his people and at the same time she wants to make Commander Ambrose see that magic can also be a good thing for the people of Ixia.

Another thing that intrigued me was Cahil's intentions and plans. I know he and Yelena had started on the wrong foot because he thought Yelena was a spy but when Roze, the First Master Magician, confirmed that Yelena wasn't, he just suddenly became all concerned and sweet around Yelena. Maybe I was wrong (and please tell me I was!) but I think he liked Yelena. Too bad when he found out that Yelena already had a 'heart mate', and worse when he found out it was Valek, he became all mad and he began suspecting Yelena again.

“Don't worry. I'm only your escort tonight. I would offer to protect you from the drunken attentions of the other men, but I know all to well that you're quite capable of holding your own. You're probably armed. Right?”
“Always.”
Cahil to Yelena

Like I said, I was also hoping to see more of Yelena-Valek moments but Valek was absent until the latter part of the book. Same with Ari and Janco. But I think their absence made Yelena become more self-reliant and stronger. She learned to depend on herself instead of always depending on Valek, Ari and Janco to save her.
He made a weak attempt to look innocent, but I knew better. “Should I guess how many concealed weapons you have or should I strip search you?”
“A strip search is the only way to be absolutely certain.” Valek's deep blue eyes danced with delight.
Overall, I loved this book. With Yelena discovering her true power and the people around her trying to help her out, I enjoyed everything. Even Yelena's interaction with Kiki was entertaining. So that being said, I wish you also enjoy this book!

And just like that half of the year has already gone by. Wishing for a good and blessed month!

Book: The Unexpected Everything by Morgan Matson

 ★★★★/★★★★★

“I knew that this couldn't last- that there were people waiting and he had things to do and this couldn't go on forever. But in that moment it was like everything fades away and there was only me and Clark and the possibility of us- whatever we might become- stretching forward in a hundred different directions, all of them unexpected, each one better than the last, the ending not yet written.”

Lighthearted and entertaining, The Unexpected Everything was my first book of Morgan Matson. It was one of those books I wished I'd read with my bestfriends because like Andie, I have three crazy bestfriends who I missed hanging out with. It was a fun read and the characters were all easy to love.

I definitely enjoyed this book and I can give you five reasons why.
First, the girls/friendship. Alexandra "Andie" Walker is a smart, determined girl who has everything planned out for her summer. She has three bestfriends; Palmer (the optimist), Toby (the hopeless romantic) and Bri (the happy-go-lucky). While Andie tries to survive her summer with a new job (walking dogs) that she really didn't want to take but didn't have a choice, she has friends by her side who support her unconditionally. She has three bestfriends to tell her if she has dog hair all over her or her party dress is too sexy. I liked how the friendship in this book was portrayed with all the meet-ups at the diner, the boy-talks, the pool party, the scavenger hunt and all the group texts they had. And of course, the drama. The four of them are basically sisters at heart and their friendship is everlasting. Until someone keeps a secret and the others find out about it.

Second, Bertie and the other dogs. Don't you just love everything that involves dogs? I mean, they're cute and they always want to play with you and they smooch you! I instantly loved the cover of this book the moment I saw it because there are dogs and it's lovely. How Bertie played a big role in the book was also cute.

Third, father-daughter relationship. Andie's father, Alexander Walker, is a prominent congressman. But a scandal is tagged on his name right now, affecting his career and endangering his place in congress. He wanted only the best for his family but when Andie's mom died five years ago, he became distant and Andie felt like she's lost her dad too. Her dad became busier and barely gave time to her. But now that he's not allowed to work (which was all he ever did) because of the on going investigation on his case, he's spending more time at home, with Andie. And as they spend time together which is awkward at first, Andie and her father eventually stop tiptoeing around each other and decided to face their father-daughter issue head on which in the end works out perfectly.

DAD
Hey, hon. Make sure to get some gas on your way home from Clark's. I don't want you to run out on the way to Mystic.
ME
Sure. But what do you mean "Clark's"? I'm at Palmer's. We're watching educational television.
DAD
Don't make me GPS the car again.
ME
Gas. Sure.
Clark says hi.
DAD
Get me a summary of his new book and all is forgiven.
ME
I'll see what I can do
Clark says if you promise no Secret Service agents he'll think about it
DAD
Tell him he's got a deal.
Fourth, the emojis. Didn't we all pass that phase when we were so in love with emojis that those were all we used? Like 👧🚗🍕👌and ☀️🚗🍨🍨👙🌊🌊🏊 and 🍔🍟🍎🍜🍕🍹 or just simply 👊!

Fifth, C.B. McCallister. Cute. Older. Shy. Fantasy novel writer who published his first book at the age of fourteen. How cool is that? I loved that Clack is not your typical boy next door but a little mysterious and deep. He loves writing but after publishing his first two books, he thinks that he's done. Until he meets new friends and a new girl who he loves making up stories with and walking dogs with.

Overall, it was a lovely book with dogs and emojis and bestfriends and cute boys. In short, you should read it!

“In all the movies Toby has made us watch, it was always somewhere very romantic. On top of the Empire State building, on a rain-streaked airport runway, at a New Year's Eve party. This moment did not, an any of the movies I could recall, take place in a bookstore in New Jersey packed with fantasy-novel readers, many of whom were in costume.
